Wooden coating for Refuge in Chile. Relaxation for mountaineers in between lines and corners

In San Esteban, Chile, the Gonzalo Iturriaga Arquitectos studio has created a contemporary building, a refuge for mountaineers that is created through floors, sections and corners of the facades

The needs of the project was for a small cabin with roof, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom with the need to resume trekking in the mountains that began the day before

The proposal involved the construction, through floors and corners of a structure that would provide an entrance through its folds and the external views through its openings. Built around a central core of services, the external shape and the internal volume are defined by the bends

At one extreme of the cabin is the bedroom and a storage room for mountaineering equipment. The other end has a sitting area where you enjoy a panoramic view of the nearby mountain

The exterior is made of pine, metal elements and panoramic windows that perform both structural and volumetric functions

The cabin is supported by batteries, making it an autonomous object suspended above the ground. The building is ventilated on all sides; the upward slope from the mountain provides airflow through a series of designated openings

This is the point of arrival and departure for the mountain hikes. It is not only a viewpoint and a refuge, but a special place for contemplation and relaxation
