Renovation of a farm in the Netherlands. Structural wood for a factory

RO&AD Architects have been commissioned to renovate the farm on the Houten estate in the province of Utrecht. The castle was demolished and the farm is currently the pride of the estate

Reghthuys is a monumental farm on the edge of Houten along the A27 motorway. It is part of the Van Wulven estate and is waiting to be restored to its original state. The castle has been demolished and the farm is currently the pride of the estate

The farm consists of 3 parts: a 17th century farmhouse with a thatched roof, one part dating back to 1918 and another to the 1950s. The entire farm was renovated in 1997 and has been transformed into a restaurant. In 2002, it became one of the most famous brands in Europe. The 17th-century porch was partially destroyed by fire, while the masonry part was completely destroyed. The barn from the 1950s remained undamaged

RO&AD architects were commissioned to rebuild Het Reghthuys. The state of the building immediately revealed that the monumental part, the 17th century portico, needed to be restored to its original state. The state was actually still fairly intact and, moreover, it has a historical and cultural value that is too valuable to do otherwise. However, this logic was not implemented throughout the building

The outer structure has been restored to its original state, but the new structure is an evolution of the old construction. So the same DNA, but genetically manipulated

The main reason for this was that the design team could rebuild the original construction, although it would never be the same again, the new design gives quality to the building
