Beach hut in the UK. The classic design is reinvented

JaK Studio completes its latest project, the "Spy Glass" beach hut in Eastbourne, UK. The panoramic window of the hut, rotating at an angle of 180 degrees, is oriented towards the sun, the seascape or the bright lights

Award-winning architecture and design studio, JaK Studio is among five winners of an international architectural design competition to create iconic beach huts to rejuvenate the coast in Devonshire Ward

The idea for the "Spy Glass" was to build a structure that would have all the nostalgia of an original beach hut with a new physical shape that would pay homage to the classic beach hut - an iconic symbol of the British sea. Spy Glass is built on a recessed platform that allows you to transform the transparent "panoramic window" of the hut into a traditional slit binocular, which can be rotated 180 degrees using the remote control, to orient itself towards the sun, the seascape or the bright lights of Eastbourne Pier, "reacting" to everyday life around it

At the end of the esplanade of the hut, there is a wood-covered entrance door with a cantilevered sofa bed inside. This cantilever has 2 window holes and an external shower head. The adaptability of Spy Glass makes it possible for the hut to be used as a private shelter on the beach

JaK Studio started designing the beach hut using a combination of robust nautical materials. The hut is positioned on a platform designed for heavy machinery that enables it to rotate from east to west. The dimensions of the spy glass are based on a traditional beach hut with typical dimensions of 2 meters wide x 3 meters long by 3 meters high

Jacob Low, founding partner of JaK Studio wants to pay tribute to the traditional beach hut while creating a modern concept for a classic design. A great source of inspiration for the project was the coin-operated binoculars that enables you to look at the sea. As you can move these binoculars, users can also move the structure to interact with the sun or the coast. Hopefully it will bring some nostalgia to local residents and visitors who visit every day
