Wooden and concrete cottage
Wood and cement for a cottage in France. High energy efficienct architecture

The project which was already underway has been reworked by the architect Patrice Bideau to adapt to the new energy regulations. Starting from a combined wooden and concrete frame, it was decided to build a highly energy-efficient house in a protected environmental area

The structure is composed of several parts: the garage and the concrete warehouse, with a wooden structure with a low pitched roof; the main body of the structure houses the living space with a bedroom on the ground floor, a bathroom and a study in the mezzanine, which becomes a loft space; the kitchen and laundry room are located in the third section that is characterized by a low pitched roof

The claddings have a fundamental importance in the project. To the north, the concrete wall between the garage and the main house has an outer Rockwool insulation, covered with wood cladding, while the inner wall is plastered as well as all the adjacent partitions. These walls are also protected from under-floor cavity to prevent all heat transfer between the floor and the heated living space and the concrete floor itself incorporating polystyrene slabs. These concrete elements, as well as the gypsum tile partitions, increase the thermal mass inside the house

The wooden structure made with uprights is insulated with cellulose wadding protected by a steam shield fixed with wooden brackets to limit the use of metal in the structure. Wood fibre panels have been fixed to the outside of the wooden frame and covered with a grey and red seasoned wood cladding. The floor of the loft space is composed of joists with OSB panels that will be finished with floating parquet in the bedroom and in the study of the mezzanine. The roofs are made of zinc with vertical seams and insulated with rock wool protected by a vapour shield. In the living space, air-dried clay bricks cover the part of the wall where a wood-burning stove will be installed
