Structure Game in Massachusetts. Enhance common spaces
The architects of Matter Design and FR|SCH Projects have designed a common play structure in the historic 'Five Fields' district of Lexington, Massachusetts.
Since its establishment, the community has taken care of and respected the territory as a whole. This open space was conceived as an experiment conducted more than sixty years ago. The TAC experiment has been a success, the maintenance and care of the common territory, unifies the community today. The designers wanted to maintain the purpose, the spirit of municipal innovation had to grow and stay alive.
The Structure for the game is in this sense a monument for collective experimentation. It celebrates the exploratory spirit of the child, as if it were nourished by an entire community. As they say, it takes a village. You also need a village where you can picture how to really create a game.
The 'Five Fields' is a playful structure and can be seen as a learning opportunity, an experiment. The play structure is both a continuation of that emphasis initiated by the TAC for common sharing. This is a space that celebrates the collective imagination, as a shared experience. It aims to strengthen the neighbourhood's relationship regarding the land and among the people who live on it.
Continuing the legacy of TAC, the game facility is an experimental expansion of existing gaming equipment that already included swings and slides. This inquiry into ambiguity and abstractness is not only a creative effort, it is also useful to stimulate the playful imagination for which it was designed. The intention is not to ask what the structure is but how do you envisage the new possibilities of playing with it?
