School in Thailand. Bamboo and natural materials for an Organic Architecture

The Bamboo Sports Hall for the Panyaden International School was designed by Chiangmai Life Architect and is based on the use of natural materials, the manual skills of man and an organic architecture that evokes the shape of the lotus flower

Organic architecture, natural materials and craftsmanship are the foundations of this architecture that the Thai studio Chiangmai Life Architect has designed for the Panyaden International School, creating the Bamboo Sports Hall

The Bamboo Sports Hall, was designed for the Panyaden International School and combines a modern organic design, 21st-century engineering and a natural material: bamboo. The design follows the Buddhist philosophy and values taught in the school, which is why it is based on the lotus flower: the architecture reflects the desire to teach the mechanisms on which the human mind is based

The demands behind the project were to build a hall that would be large enough to accommodate 300 students, but would fit in perfectly with the school's previous land and bamboo buildings and the natural landscape of the area. It was expected to provide modern sports facilities and use only bamboo to maintain the low-cost carbon footprint, a mission already stated by the "Green School" in Panyaden

The hall covers an area of 782 square meters and houses football fields, basketball, volleyball and badminton, as well as a stage that can be dismantled. The background of the stage corresponds to the front wall of a storage room where the sports and theatrical equipment are kept. On both long sides, there is space to accommodate visitors during events

The bamboo structure is an extraordinary example of skilled craftsmanship. Under the guidance of two engineers, it was built to withstand local high-speed winds, earthquakes and all other natural hazards. The innovative structural design is based on prefabricated bamboo trusses with a span of over 17 meters without steel reinforcements or connections. These trusses were pre-mounted on site and raised on site

A lot of importance has been given to the ecological footprint of Panyaden's Sports Hall which is zero. In fact, the bamboo has absorbed much more carbon than the carbon emitted during the treatment, transport and construction. No toxic chemicals have been involved in the treatment process. The "lifespan" of the hall should be at least 50 years

Natural and ecological materials were the cornerstones of this project, but despite what we sometimes think, this did not prevent the creation of a remarkably modern Architecture
