The two buildings are made of Vaia wood, a special type of wood that comes from the felling of 8.7 million cubic metres of trees during a storm that also hit the woods around the Zirmerhof. The project has transformed this wood into an installation of art and architecture
New rooms for a hotel in Südtirol. Holistic approach to art, architecture and design
The Houses of Prato conceived and designed by AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi are two small wooden architectures that add six new rooms to the Hotel Zirmerhof, in which the rooms are transformed into an art and architectural installation that is in harmony with nature
Every detail of the project has been studied to be in synergy with nature, history and sensitivity of the Zirmerhof. First of all, there was the choice to build the houses with the felled trees. The wood from the recovered fir trees was used for beams and load-bearing walls; while with the recovery of the larch trees, formwork, cladding, floors and interior walls were created. Wood is the great protagonist of the project, chosen for its ability to change continuously
On a formal level, the rounded lines of the roofs follow the profiles of the barns of the peasant tradition, using an ancient construction technique. However, the two houses have different shapes, the first is circular and houses two suites on two levels, the second is linear and houses four flats on two levels and a central full-height space
Both architectures are characterized by the panoramic terraces on the upper floor and the arches of the continuous portico on the ground floor. The frame design of the doors and windows is inspired by the classic windows of mountain houses. The environment is conceived as a scenography, created thanks to Produzione Privata, the company created by Michele De Lucchi to create experimental design objects and support craftsmanship
