Guesthouse for young people. The right balance between public and private space

A small Japanese hotel for young people, where the privacy of the guests is guaranteed but there is also the possibility of socializing with other guests, thanks to the direct connection between the rooms and the common room

A small hotel located in Koya-san, Japan, is designed to accommodate mainly young people. Its architecture ensures both the protection of privacy and the possibility to socialize with other guests, thanks to the view that the individual rooms have on the corridor leading to the common room. This enables each guest to choose the distance they would like from the shared space

There are two types of spaces designed: the rooms, consisting of a simple wooden structure, which are mainly single and a room for 20 people. The eight single rooms echo the style of Japanese capsules, where privacy is well protected, while the two bathrooms and two shower rooms are shared

The wooden structure is surrounded by external walls containing the insulation. A corridor defined by two wooden colonnades is at the centre of the architecture. It is naturally lit and acts as a link between the private and public spaces
